Mites

GTHA Mite Program

Overview

The GTHA Mite Program is committed to providing a fun, safe, and positive ice-hockey experience focusing on the athletic development, personal growth and sportsmanship of young athletes in our community. We follow the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM), a nationwide model for successfully developing American hockey players.

The primary goal of this program is to emphasize participation, skill development, and a positive experience for all players, regardless of their abilities. Through this program we strive to instill basic ice-hockey skills, sportsmanship, and a love for the game in a safe and encouraging environment.

6U Mites

Our 6U group typically consists of first-year hockey players that have been through our Instructional Program or another learn-to-skate program.  6U teams normally play 4-on-4 games, cross-ice with mini-mite nets (36" x 24") and no goalies. Our 6U group will play games against each-other during our inter-squad tournaments (at Centre Ice) as well as against other teams by participating in tournaments around the state of Michigan.  The main development focus of 6U hockey is individual skill development (e.g. skating, puck control, passing, shooting).

7U / 8U Mites

The 7U and 8U teams are typically a mix of returning players and first-year hockey players that have been through our Instructional Program.  7U and 8U teams play 4-on-4 games with goalies, half-ice, with ADM 8U Junior nets (48" x 36").  7U and 8U groups will practice separately, but will play games in mixed 7/8U teams. They will play against each-other during our inter-squad tournaments (at Centre Ice) as well as against other teams by participating in tournaments around the state of Michigan.  Goalies are introduced for the first time at 7U, and all players are encouraged to try the position at least once during the season, with goalie gear provided by GTHA.
